Roselle "Babe" Sebes Obituary

Roselle “Babe” Sebes, originally from Wall, PA died peacefully on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.  She was the daughter of the late John and Anna Stanko and sister to John (Jr.) and Robert.  Babe, as she was called by friends and family, was a graduate of Westinghouse Memorial High School in Wilmerding.  She worked at Mellon Bank and at the Westinghouse Airbrake Company. She met and married her husband, Michael J. Sebes, and took time off work to raise her five children. She returned to the workforce at Gemstone Jewelry at the Monroeville Mall.

Babe was a very active member of St. Aloysius Church (now known as St. Joseph the Worker parish) serving as choir director for more than 20 years. Coming from a musical family allowed her to be instrumental in introducing folk music to the choir in the early 70s.  She loved preparing the choir music for the Christmas Season and the Easter Vigil.  A favorite pastime of hers was to play a combination of classical music as well as nursery rhymes for her children as they grew. Her love for music instilled a love and appreciation for music in all of her children.

Babe’s true superpower in life, however, was sharing her love with her family and friends, which she did so generously and without reservation.  Any child that needed a grandparent or was special to her or one of her children in some way became her grandchild. She always knew just what to say to make someone feel special and loved.  She was a “second mom” to an army of Wilmerding kids.  She also loved dogs and had several in her lifetime.  Her childrens’ dogs became her dogs too, and she showered them with treats!  She was lucky enough to spend many months with her latest companion, Dudley, who she lived with for a year in Nashville, TN.   She had a great sense of humor that runs through her extended family.  She was loved by her nieces and nephews (especially Roberta, Roselle and David), her children’s friends and just about anyone who was fortunate enough to know her.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Michael, newborn son, Thomas George, and her beloved grandson Christopher Lane.  She is survived by her children Pat, Jan (Tom), Mickey (Holly), John (Cindy) and Marbie (Jodi), her grandchildren Jessica Shea (Matt), Jordan Lane, Ben Lane (Celene), Ali White (Bobby), Rob Sebes, Nikki Laux (Adam), Alaina Sebes, Alex Gumucio, Gabi Gumucio, cherished great grandchildren Liam and Hazel Shea, Nora and Owen White and honorary grandchildren Alec Crim Bell, and Lilyana Cooke.

Family and friends will be received at the Alfieri Funeral Home, 201 Marguerite Ave, Wilmerding, PA on Monday, May 8, 2023, from 2PM to 8 PM.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 10AM at St. Joseph the Worker parish in Wilmerding.  Interment will be at the New St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in North Versailles.
