Vurgich, Leona "Lee" Carlson
Leona "Lee” (Carlson) Vurgich, age 84 of Penn Hills, PA passed away peacefully on April 8th, 2024, following an extended battle with Parkinson’s disease. Leona was the beloved wife of George Vurgich for 63 years and the daughter of the late Harold and Irene (Jendreski) Carlson.
Leona graduated from Carnegie High School prior to receiving her bachelor’s degree from Edinboro University. After obtaining her master's degree from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ, she taught 9th grade English in the Penn Hills School District for almost ten years.
Leona loved animals and nature. She was especially fond of dogs and birds, rescuing several of them by either taking them in or by nursing them back to health when injured. This was exemplified by her membership with the Animal Humane Society. Leona was an avid reader, loved to travel, go on long walks, garden, and attend flea markets. She was a member of East Liberty Presbyterian Church in Shadyside and also the Crescent Hills Civic Association.
Leona was predeceased by her brother Harold "Brud" Carlson, sister-in-law Sherry Vurgich, and brother-in-law Richard Vignovich. She is survived by sisters-in-law Constance Carlson and Dolores Vignovich, brother-in-law Ralph Vurgich, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
