Bernice Elko Knipling, age 86, of Wall, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2025.
Born on January 22, 1939, in Wall, PA, Bernice was the cherished daughter of the late John and Anna Elko. She was one of eight children and remained closely connected to her siblings throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Knipling; siblings Ruth Hegland , Nicholas Elko, George Elko, and Michael Elko. She is survived by her loving siblings John Elko, Donald Elko, and Rose Elko.
Bernice was a devoted aunt and a guiding presence in the lives of her many nieces and nephews—16 in total—as well as over 20 great-nieces and nephews. She shared a particularly special bond with her niece and caregiver, LaVonne Shields, who provided her with loving support, especially in her later years.
Bernice dedicated much of her professional life to Westinghouse in Trafford, PA, where she was known for her reliability and warmth. Her faith played a central role throughout her life. A devout Byzantine Catholic, she was an active parishioner at Holy Trinity Church in Wall, PA. There, she served as a catechism teacher and church leader, sharing her deep spirituality and love for her community with generations of parishioners.
A proud Slovak, Bernice was passionate about preserving and celebrating her heritage. She brought joy to every gathering, whether through lively conversations with friends and family or a competitive game of Bingo—her favorite pastime. Her selfless, comforting, and faithful spirit was felt by all who knew her.
Bernice's life was a beautiful reflection of devotion—to her family, her faith, her friends and her community. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, kindness, and cultural pride.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (benefitting Bryce & Elsie’s Buddies), in Bernice’s memory.
